Most people picture one thing when they think of a Persian grill: beef kabobs. They’re wonderful, and our koobideh, made with ground beef, is one of the dishes I’m proudest of. But not everyone at your table eats beef, and that’s exactly why our grill goes well beyond it. Whether your group includes chicken lovers, lamb fans, someone who prefers fish, or a vegetarian friend, there’s a plate for everyone. Here are five choices worth knowing about.
1. Chicken Koobideh
If you love the idea of koobideh but would like it with chicken, this is your dish. Chicken Koobideh is a skewer of ground chicken seasoned with ground onions and spices. It has the same tender, hand-shaped texture as our classic koobideh, with a milder flavor that’s popular with kids and anyone who prefers poultry. Our regular koobideh, made with ground beef, is halal.
2. Chicken Kabobs, Barg, and Joojeh
Our menu has several ways to enjoy chicken from the grill. Chicken Kabob is boneless, skinless chicken marinated and broiled. Chicken Barg is a sliced chicken breast, marinated and skewered. Joojeh Kabob is a whole Cornish hen, cut into eight pieces and marinated. And if you can’t decide, the Chicken Shamshiri combines chicken barg and chicken koobideh on one plate.
3. Lamb: Bareh Kabob and Shishlick
Lamb brings a deeper, richer flavor to the grill. Bareh Kabob is made with boneless lamb ribeye chunks, marinated and skewered, while Shishlick is marinated lamb chops. Both are broiled and served with grilled vegetables, broiled tomatoes, and basmati rice. Our lamb dishes are halal, and our team is happy to answer any questions about them.
4. Fresh Fish Kabob
For something lighter, our Fresh Fish Kabob is made with daily fresh fish, marinated and broiled, and served with a skewer of whole tomatoes and seasonal vegetables, along with green salad and basmati rice. The fish may be white fish or salmon, depending on the day, so ask your server what’s available.
5. Vegetarian Plates With a Vegetable Kabob
Vegetarian guests don’t need to feel like an afterthought at a Persian grill. Several of our vegetarian dishes, such as Vegetarian Sabzi Polo or Vegetarian Zereshk Polo, are served with a vegetable kabob and your choice of green or Shirazi salad. They bring fresh herbs, saffron, and barberries to the table, along with that same grilled flavor. Ask your server about today’s vegetarian selections.
Building a Table Everyone Will Enjoy
When a group has mixed tastes, I like to suggest ordering a few different plates and sharing them family-style. Maybe a chicken koobideh, a lamb kabob, and a vegetarian plate, with a Shirazi salad in the middle of the table. That way everyone gets to taste something new, and nobody has to compromise on what they eat.
You can see the complete range on our menu page, and our Persian grill page tells you more about what comes off the fire. If you’re planning a larger gathering with mixed tastes, our catering page is a great place to start.
Guests from Los Feliz and Atwater Village sometimes come in with large, mixed groups, and I love seeing everyone find their favorite.
